English Definition
An indicator calculated for children under five years of age (0–59 months), which includes: 1-Underweight: The percentage of children under five whose weight-for-age is below minus two standard deviations from the median of the reference population. 2- Wasting (thinness): The percentage of children aged 12–23 months whose weight-for-height is below minus two standard deviations from the median of the reference population. 3-Stunting (short stature): The percentage of children aged 24–59 months whose height-for-age is below minus two standard deviations from the median of the reference population. The reference population is based on U.S. children, assuming they are in the best health and care conditions. This indicator has also been calculated in the Human Development Index using local weight deficits in many countries. The three measures reflect different forms of malnutrition: Stunting indicates chronic malnutrition (short stature for age). Wasting indicates acute malnutrition (thinness). Underweight reflects both moderate and severe malnutrition among children. Tracking these indicators over time shows changes in the nutritional situation, while monitoring them across regions highlights disparities. They can also be disaggregated by sex and region. Noticeable improvements usually require at least five years, making this indicator a reflection of both economic growth and the nutritional status of society.
