Research and Development is an annual survey concerned with research and development fields in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It aims to provide economic indicators of research and development.

• Providing data on research and development expenditures and sources for all sectors.

• Providing data about employees in the field of research and development across all sectors. 

• Identifying the expenditure on research and development from GDP.

Research and development: It includes every creative and systematic work undertaken with the aim of increasing knowledge, including knowledge of humanity, culture, and society, and in order to invent new applications of available knowledge.  

Expenditure on research and development: It includes all expenses related to research and development activities carried out within an economic sector.

Workers of research and development: All individuals who directly participate in research and development, as well as
those who provide direct services to the activities such as research and development managers, administrative personnel, technicians, and office employees. It excludes persons who provide indirect support and assistance services such as catering, maintenance, and security personnel.

Researchers: Professionals involved in designing and innovating new knowledge. Researchers conduct research and improve or develop concepts, theories, models, technologies, devices, software, or operating methods. Managers and administrators involved in planning and managing the scientific and technical aspects of research are also classified as "researchers". PhD students working in research and development should also be counted as "researchers".  

Technicians: They are people whose main tasks require technical knowledge and experience in one or more fields of engineering, physical sciences and life sciences (technicians) or social sciences, humanities and arts. They participate in research and development to carry out scientific and technical tasks that require the application of concepts and operational methods and the use of research equipment, usually under the supervision of researchers.

Part-time. An employee who works fewer hours than the usual working hours (8 hours per day).

Percentage of working hours 25%: A full-time employee (8 hours a day) for three months or a quarter-time research employee (2 hours a day) for a year.

Percentage of working hours 50%: A full-time employee (8 hours a day) for six months or a half-time research employee (4 hours a day) for a year.
