Most countries of the world are keen on providing official statistics of economic indicators on a continuous annual base for the important role of these statistics in reflecting the economic status of the establishments, and providing recent statistical data that aid decision makers. The statistics provide data that demonstrate how small and medium-sized establishments participate in the gross domestic product (GDP). Additionally, this reflects how such establishments grow and continue, and it displays the obstacles that may hinder the continuity of the establishments.

Building on the aforementioned, the Small and Medium-Sized Establishments Survey is necessary for the following reasons: 

1. The extent of contribution of small and medium-sized enterprises in local production
2. Providing data that help in knowing the rates of growth and continuation of small and medium-sized enterprises for every economic activity
3. Determining the workforce capacity of each economic activity; 
4. Knowing the volume of change in due reparations of employees according to the economic activity
5. Knowing the volume of expenses and revenues for every economic activity
6. To recognize the most prominent obstacles that may hinder the continuity of the establishments in the labor market.
7. To provide data about how small and medium-sized establishments benefit from electronic systems and services.
